XC

10/17 - On Saturday your XC Chargers raced on a wet muddy course in the Kent / Ottawa Championships at Gainey Fields. The kids were up against division 1&2 schools in Kent county. They had fun with it and raced hard in the tough conditions the Lord in His perfect plan had them running in. The boys took 4th place in the meet with Levi Kamps, Nick Lubbers, Mason Schimmell, and Luke Dykstra taking home top 20 medals. The girls finished 7th in their race with Amber Koole finishing 5th overall. Our teams are primed and ready to run their best races as we head toward the finish and our championship season. It's SENIOR WEEK! So as we get back to work this week we celebrate and thank them for their good Christian example and all the time, work, & energy they have given to our teams these last four years! We have been blessed by them!

Covenant falls to Calvin in a thriller!

10/18 - On a cold blustery rainy afternoon the Chargers went on the road to take on the Calvin Christian Squires in the opening game for the MHSAA soccer playoffs.  Both teams struggled a bit early on with the windy conditions and slippery grass but Covenant was able to put some early pressure on the Calvin defense but unable to put the ball in the goal.  The momentum soon switched to the Squires who were able to capitalize on a couple of Charger miscues to grab a two goal lead. (16:35 and 10:07).  The Chargers ended the half with a flurry of opportunities, yet the Squire's goalie turned away the shots to help Calvin hold a 2-0 lead at the half.

The Squires were able to add a third goal on another Charger foul at the 26:42 mark of the second half and seemingly had control of the game.  However, the Chargers did not go away quietly but turned up the pressure immensely on the Calvin defense to pull within one goal.  At the 21:13 mark, following a Calvin foul, Aiden Cnossen found Jonny Kuiper with a perfectly placed pass for a header to make it 3-1.  Despite wave after wave of offensive attacks by the Chargers, the Chargers did not score again til the 6:51 mark when Travis Holstege found Derek Gritters with a crossing pass and Derek's shot found the back of the net to make it 3-2.  The Chargers still kept the ball pressure on the Squire defense/goalie but were unable to come up with the equalizer and lost 3-2 to end the season.

The Chargers finished the year with a record of 6-11-3 but also created many great memories of their time together.  A big "THANK YOU!" to coaches Mike Noorman, Shawn Griess, and Sam Lubbers for working and guiding these young men during the 2022 season. Final Record 6-11-3

Varsity Soccer

Covenant vs Fruitport
9/27 Varsity Soccer. On a cool crisp Tuesday evening the Chargers took on the Trojans of Fruitport (7-6-2) at Charger Stadium under the lights.  The first half saw both teams with limited offensive opportunities as shots were kept at bay and what did go on net the goalies were up to the task in keeping the balls out of the net.

The second half saw Fruitport control the ball offensively for much of the half and apply more pressure on the Charger defense and goalie Jaydon Gritters. The Charger defense held firm in keeping the Trojans off the scoreboard despite the pressure from the Fruitport offense.   At the 14:42 mark Jaydon Gritters made a spectacular diving save off a Trojan strike to keep the game scoreless.  The Chargers managed a couple of shots late in the game but were unable to break the 0-0 tie.  Jaydon Gritters had a busy night with 13 saves for the Chargers.

The Chargers record moves to 5-7-3 with the tie and back into second place seed in the district moving ahead of Potter's House but still yet behind Calvin Christian for the top seed in District 51 Division 4.  The Chargers are back in action Wednesday night AT Wyoming High School at 6:45 pm.  The next Charger home game at Charger Stadium is Thursday night versus Holland Christian at 6:45 pm.

9/28 Wolves Take Down the Chargers

The Charger soccer team invaded the den of the Wyoming Wolves (6-9-1) Wednesday night and felt the attack of the Wolves in more ways than one, losing 3-0.

The Wolves came out with a very aggressive game plan and applied heavy pressure on the Charger defense right from the get go.  The Wolves got on the scoreboard first with a header off a corner kick at the 22:59 mark to go up 1-0 and continued to pepper the Charger goalie in the first half but goalie Jaydon Gritters made the saves to keep it 1-0 at the half.

The Chargers offense came alive to start the second half with some pressure of their own against the Wolves' defense getting some shots on goal but unable to put the ball past the Wyoming goalie.  The second half also turned it into a foul fest as many fouls and yellow cards were called on the Wolves but the Chargers were unable to take advantage of their opportunities in the second half.  A breakaway at the 11:30 mark of the second half resulted in a number of close chances for the Chargers to get on the scoreboard but the Wyoming defense stiffened and about a minute later the Wolves responded with their second goal of the game at the 10:59 mark to go up 2-0.  Just a minute following that goal, the Wolves struck again at the 9:42 mark to put the game away making it 3-0 for the final score.

The Chargers fall to 5-8-3 on the season and fall into third place in the district seeding behind Calvin Christian and Potter's House.  The Chargers play their third game in a row Thursday night AT Charger Stadium versus the Holland Christian Maroons (9-1-3).  Game time is at 6:45 pm under the lights.

Chargers Lose a Close One!

Thursday night 9/29, the Charger Varsity soccer team entertained the visitors from Holland Christian (10-1-3) under the lights at Charger Stadium.  Most of the first half saw the two teams playing mainly in the middle of the field trying to put together an offensive attack.  The Chargers came close to scoring first in the half when Spencer Holstege received a well placed pass from Travis Holstege but just missed with the strike going over the crossbar.  However, it was Holland Christian who struck first at the 24:05 mark with a well placed strike on the left side of the goal.  Covenant continued to get some offensive opportunities in the first half but failed to capitalize on them keeping the score at 1-0.

The second half was much of the same as the first half with a lot of midfield play from both teams until the last 15 or so minutes when the offensive attacks from both the Maroons and the Chargers yielded some quality shots that resulted in some nice saves or near misses.  Goalie Jaydon Gritters again made a spectacular save at the 12:21 to keep the Maroons from going up two goals and give the Chargers a chance yet for a tie or win late in the game.  Despite some great chances late in the game, the Chargers were unable to get the equalizer and lost 1-0.

The Chargers fall to 5-9-3 on the season with the last week of the regular season coming up with two home games on tap for Thursday and Friday night at Charger Stadium.  Thursday night has the Fremont Packers (4-11-1) visiting and the Warriors of Western Michigan Christian (7-7-2) come Friday night to Charger Stadium to finish the regular season.  Both games start at 6:45pm.

Chargers Cross Country Report
10/1/22 -  Your Charger XC teams raced Saturday morning at Shepherd High School in the Shepherd Bluejay Invite. This is run on a beautiful dedicated XC course in the fields and woods behind the school. The weather was great for racing and it was reflected in our teams running a ton of Season best and Personal Best times. This is a huge meet and we ran in the Elite division against many of the best teams in the state for all divisions. This made it difficult for our kids to medal as individuals and as a team. However Amber Koole did medal for the girls running in the top 40 of the varsity race. Our main goal was accomplished and that was to take another big step toward our team goals. We will get back it this week and prepare for a huge meet this Saturday at Portage. Can't wait!

A Scoring Explosion!!

10/6 - The Fremont Packers (4-14-1) drove to Charger Stadium to take on the Chargers on a cool wet night and found themselves on the receiving end of a scoring spree by the Chargers.  The Chargers ended a nearly five game scoreless streak at the 28:06 mark of the first half when Spencer Holstege blasted a strike past the Packer goalie for a 1-nil lead.  The goal was assisted by Logan Holstege.  With the Chargers dominating the offensive end, Covenant found themselves scoring two more goals in the first half.  At the 21:56 mark the Chargers made it 2-nil with Carter Scholten scoring assisted by Jayden Bylsma.  Jayden Bylsma added to his assist total with a well-timed pass to Aiden Cnossen at the 16:34 to make the half-time score 3-0.

Covenant went on to the second half continuing to put heavy pressure on the Fremont defense while the stout Charger defense of Tony Vanoverloop, Nick VanOverloop, Weston Meulenberg, Hayden VanOverloop, Cody Scholten, Ethan Deemter, Derek Gritters, Jonathon Boeve and others including goalie Jaydon Gritters put the clamps on the Packers offense.  The defense was outstanding in limiting the Packer offense to just a couple of shots on goal and forcing numerous turnovers from the Packers to help ignite the Charger offense.

The Charger offense started scoring right away in the second half with a goal by Jonny Kuiper with the assist by Travis Holstege at the 35:17 mark to go up 4-0. Just five minutes later it became 5-0 with Jonny Kuiper scoring again at the 30:06 mark with the assist by Aiden Cnossen.  Six minutes later off a corner kick assist by Aiden VanDyke to Carter Scholten who put it past the Packer goalie to make it 6-0 at 24:07 mark.  The scoring concluded with two goals late in the game with one by Spencer Holstege off a rebound shot by Aiden VanDyke and the finisher by Tony VanOverloop after stealing the ball from a Packer defender at the 3:27 mark to give the Chargers the 8-0 mercy.

The Chargers (Season Record 6-9-1) conclude their regular season Friday night on Senior Night at Charger Stadium versus the Warriors of Western Michigan Christian (7-5-1).

Chargers lose a nail-biter!

10/7 - The Warriors of Western Michigan Christian (8-5-1) invaded Charger Stadium and left with a hard fought 2-1 victory over the host Chargers.

The Warriors struck first early in the first half off a Warrior throw-in on a shot that eluded goalie Jaydon Gritters at the 38:26 mark to put WMC up 1-0. The Chargers nearly tied the score at the 10:39 mark on a nice pass from Carter Scholten to Travis Holstege but the WMC goalie made the save to keep the score 1-nil.  Just 3 minutes later at 7:36  Ethan Deemter led Spencer Holstege on a lead pass up the middle that Spencer struck past the WMC goalie to tie the score at 1-1.  The Charger defense remained strong  and the score was 1-1 at the half.

Both defenses hunkered down in the second half and kept the offenses from scoring til the 25:17 mark when WMC struck to go up 2-1.  Despite some opportunities in the second half, Covenant was unable to get the equalizer and fall to WMC 2-1 and end the regular season at 6-10-3.

The seniors that played their final game at Charger Stadium were the following:

Cross Country

Your CCHS Charger XC teams raced at one of the biggest Cross Country meets in the nation this past Saturday at the Portage Invite. It was a beautiful cool morning and the kids raced extremely well for the 4th straight week. We raced against many of the best teams in the state in Division 3 in the hopes of getting a good idea how we stacked up and we are happy with where we sit at this point in the season. Your Varsity boys finished 4th out of 35 teams with Levi Kamps and Nick Lubbers receiving medals for running in the top 50. The varsity girls finished 10th out of 31 teams and Amber Koole medaled, finishing 8th overall. Both your JV teams finished 3rd overall and a huge group of boys & girls received top 50 medals. It's so cool to have a meet like this where the JV runners have a good opportunity to receive medals and recognition. What a fun Day! We are back at it this week working hard, as we start to face the championship time of year!
