It has been a whirlwind trip this week, and it all ends Saturday the the MHSAA State Finals at the Breslin Center on the campus of Michigan State University. Game time is 4:30. See you there!!

2017 Regional Champs!!

For the first time since 1994, the Covenant Christian Chargers are Regional champs. It wasn't an easy path. After a double overtime victory over on Monday, the Boys took on the Tigers of Muskegon Heights on Wednesday.
The Chargers couldn't find the range in the 1st quarter, falling behind by 11 midway through the quarter. They cut the lead to 18-13 after 8 minutes of action. Covenant continued to chip away at the lead, and closed out the half on a 9-2 run to take a 28-26 lead into the locker room.
The second half provided a lot of opportunities for the huge mass of Covenant fans to cheer, and to hold their breath. The Tigers opened the half on a 7-0 run, forcing the Chargers to once again play catch-up. The Tigers held a 38-36 lead going into the fourth quarter. Covenant took a 49-48 lead with 30 seconds left in the game. Muskegon Heights scored a bucket to take a 50-49 lead. Covenant called a time-out, and set up the dramatic ending, with Carson Meulenberg hitting a 12 footer with 1.3 seconds left, to give the Chargers the victory.
Carson Meulenberg led the Chargers with 19 points, followed by Trenton Koole with 17. Covenant will take on Kalamazoo Christian in the Quarterfinals on Tuesday, march 21 at 7:00 at Davenport University

Chargers win Thriller to Advance to Regional Finals

The Chargers travelled to Belding on Monday to take on the Pirates of Pewamo-Westphalia in the opening round of the MHSAA Regionals. The Chargers fans exited the arena with heart-stopping double overtime victory, 56-52, to advance to the Regionals Finals.
The Chargers played from behind for most of the first half, trailing 13-12 after one quarter, and 25-22 at the halftime break. Covenant came out of the break, with two three pointers by Trenton Koole, to take the lead, and the momentum. The Chargers outscored the Pirated 17-11 in the third quarter to take a 39-36 lead. In a high intensity fourth quarter, it looked the Chargers had put the Pirates away, but a three pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining gave to send the game into overtime, at 48-48.
Overtime one saw "limited scoring", with both teams putting 2 points on the board. In the second overtime, Covenant put up six points to P-W's 2, to win the game 56-52.
Trenton Koole led the chargers with 21 points, followed by Carson Meulenberg with 12, and Tyler cammenga with 11.
In the Regional Finals, Covenant will take on Muskegon Heights on Wednesday at 7:00 at Belding.
Boys BB wins MHSAA District

In a game that lived up to its billing, Covenant defeated Calvin Christian by a score of 62-54 on Friday night at NorthPointe Chr. In front of a packed gym, the Chargers opened the game on a 10-0 run, which brought the "No Fun Zone" to life. Calvin Chr fought back, and cut the lead to five at the end of the first quarter. The Chargers opened up a 10 point lead at halftime, 36-26. Calvin stormed out of the locker room to open the 3rd quarter, holding the Chargers to 6 points, cutting the lead to 42-37 entering the final quarter. Covenant held off and answered several runs by Squires, and pandelerium reigned as the final buzzer sounded. Coach Tyler Schimmel and the Chargers raised the Championship trophy with a 62-54 victory.
Covenant advances to the Regional on Monday, March 13 at Belding, where they will take on the Pirates of Pewamo-Westhphalia at 5:30
